How to Make a Felted Sheet of Wool

Felting is a fun and rewarding craft that transforms loose wool fibers into a dense, durable fabric. This tutorial will guide you through the process of making a felted sheet of wool.

Materials Needed:

  • Wool roving or batting
  • Bubble wrap or a bamboo mat
  • Warm soapy water (mild dish soap or liquid soap works well)
  • Spray bottle
  • Towel
  • Rolling pin (optional)
  • Netting or tulle (optional)
  • Rubber gloves (optional)

Step 1: Prepare Your Workspace

  1. Lay down a towel on your workspace to catch any water and soap.
  2. Place a piece of bubble wrap or a bamboo mat on top of the towel, bubble side up.

Step 2: Lay Out the Wool

  1. Pull small tufts of wool from the roving or batting and lay them out on the bubble wrap in a single layer, all fibers running in one direction.
  2. Add a second layer on top, with the fibers running perpendicular to the first layer.
  3. Continue adding layers, alternating the direction of the fibers, until you have a desired thickness. Typically, 3-4 layers are sufficient.

Step 3: Wet the Wool

  1. Fill a spray bottle with warm soapy water.
  2. Lightly spray the wool layers until they are evenly wet but not soaked.
  3. Press down gently on the wool to help it absorb the water.

Step 4: Cover and Begin Felting

  1. Place a piece of netting or tulle over the wet wool to keep the fibers in place.
  2. Gently press down on the wool with your hands, using a circular motion to help the fibers begin to bond.

Step 5: Roll the Wool

  1. Carefully roll up the bubble wrap or bamboo mat, keeping the wool and netting inside.
  2. Secure the roll with rubber bands if needed.
  3. Roll the package back and forth, applying gentle pressure. Roll for about 5-10 minutes.

Step 6: Check and Re-Wet

  1. Unroll the package and check the wool. It should be starting to felt (fibers bonding together).
  2. If necessary, spray more soapy water and continue rolling.

Step 7: Fulling

  1. Once the wool is well felted, you can begin the fulling process. Remove the netting and roll the felt directly on the bubble wrap or mat.
  2. Roll with more pressure this time, for another 5-10 minutes.
  3. Rotate the felt periodically to ensure even fulling.

Step 8: Rinse and Dry

  1. Rinse the felted wool sheet with cold water to remove any soap residue.
  2. Gently squeeze out excess water without wringing the felt.
  3. Lay the felted sheet flat on a towel to dry, reshaping as necessary.

Step 9: Finish

  1. Once dry, your felted sheet is ready to use! You can cut it into shapes, sew it into projects, or use it as is.

Tips for Success

  • Ensure each layer of wool is evenly distributed to avoid thin spots in your felt.
  • Use warm, not hot, water to avoid shocking the wool.
  • Be patient; felting can take some time and elbow grease.
