Fiber Processing Policy

Last Modified May 27, 2024

At Shear Confection Fiber Mill, we are committed to providing high-quality fiber processing services. To ensure the best results and maintain the integrity of our facilities, we require all incoming fiber to meet specific conditions. Please review the following guidelines for preparing your wool or other fibers for processing and understand our policies on how we handle and return processed fibers.

Conditions for Receiving Fiber

1. Packaging Requirements:
All fiber must be sent in large, clear bags. Please do not seal bags but tie loosely. Fiber will “sweat” in sealed bags and must have air circulation to help avoid damaging the fiber.  We do not accept fiber in black garbage bags as they attract pests.

2. Fiber Cleanliness and Condition:
Fiber must be free of pests, including but not limited to moths, lice, and moth eggs. We will not process any fiber that is infested with pests. If any fiber sent to us is found to be infested, it will be disposed of, and you may be subjected to cover any loss incurred by those pests, including but not limited to fumigation of our facilities.  Fiber must be strong enough to handle being processed by mill equipment. We reserve the right to reject any fiber that cannot be safely processed on our equipment. Rejected fiber will be returned or disposed of at the customer’s expense and discretion.  Fiber with heavy vegetable matter (VM) load or any other foreign matter, will retain that in the finished product. We are unable to remove all unwanted foreign matter.

3. Identification and Documentation:
Each shipment must include a completed packing slip identifying the owner, type of fiber, order number, weight, and desired services.  Fiber sent without a completed packing slip will become the property of the mill. Please weigh your fiber and round to the nearest pound. We charge by the whole pound. We will re-weigh your fiber upon intake.

Processing and Return of Fiber

1. Inspection and Acceptance:
Upon receipt, all fiber will be inspected to ensure it meets our conditions for processing. Fiber that does not meet our standards will not be processed and will be handled as per the guidelines stated above.

2. Processing Standards:
We take great care to process your fiber to the highest quality standards. However, please note that the final quality of processed fiber depends largely on the condition of the raw fiber received.

3. Return of Processed Fiber:
Processed fiber will be returned in clean, secure packaging to prevent contamination and damage. Customers are responsible for the cost of shipping the processed fiber back to them.

4. Unclaimed Fiber:
Any fiber not collected within 30 days of notification of completion will become the property of the mill. We will make reasonable efforts to contact you once your order is complete.

5. Dyed Fiber and Yarn:

Please note that colors represented on computer screens and cell phones will differ when viewed in person. We can’t guarantee an exact color match due to differences in the base color of your fiber, how well your fiber takes a dye, the quality of the fiber you send us, the amount of VM present in the fiber, and a variety of other factors that go into the art and science of dyeing fiber. We do not offer refunds for dying services. By purchasing this service, you agree and understand the inherent risks and unpredictability of dying fiber and accept all risks.

The minimum quantity for a dye lot is 1lb of fiber. All fiber submitted at the same time for this service will be processed together and result in the same dye lot. We are not able to guarantee fiber submitted in a different order will exactly match the dyed color from a previous order.

All fiber submitted for a dye lot must be the same type of fiber, for best results. For example, if you send Suffolk wool and alpaca fleece for the same dye lot, you will get a blend of both fibers. The wool may take up color better than alpaca fiber, for example, and the end product will be a blend of the two color variations.  We will send the fiber through the picker together but we cannot guarantee a homogenous blend based on the differences in the types of fiber, the micron count, crimp and other factors.  For a fully homogenous blend, we recommend taking the picked cloud we provide to you, and pass it through a drum carder several times until you reach the desired blend you want.

Local Fiber Drop-Off and Pick-Up Locations

Risk Acceptance for Drop-Off and Pick-Up Locations

Customers who choose to drop off fiber at one of our unattended drop-off locations accept the risk of theft or loss of fiber. Similarly, customers who opt to use a pick-up location also accept the risk of theft or loss of fiber.  We make reasonable efforts to secure both drop-off and pick-up locations; however, we cannot monitor these locations 24/7. Therefore, we are not responsible for any loss or theft of fiber left in either drop-off or pick-up locations.

Use at Your Own Risk

The use of local drop-off and pick-up locations is at your own risk. For the most secure method of delivery, we recommend shipping your fiber. Please note that shipping expenses are the responsibility of the consumer, and we do not cover these costs. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Liability and Disclaimer

1. Infested Fiber:
If any fiber is found to be infested with pests, it will be disposed of immediately to protect our facilities. You may be held liable for any costs associated with pest control measures, including fumigation of our facilities.

2. Damaged or Weak Fiber:
We are not responsible for any damage to fiber that occurs as a result of its inherent weakness or condition. Fiber must be strong enough to withstand processing.

3. Lost or Unidentified Fiber:
Fiber sent without proper identification or documentation will become the property of the mill and may not be returned to the sender.

4. Inherent Risk:
Animal fibers, such as wool, mohair, and alpaca, are naturally prone to felting under certain conditions, including heat, moisture, and agitation.

5. No Liability:
While we use industry-standard techniques and equipment to minimize the risk, we cannot guarantee that felting will not occur during processing.

6. No Refunds:
We do not provide refunds or accept liability for fiber that accidentally felts during processing or for dyed fiber or yarn inconsistent with your expectations.

By sending your fiber to Shear Confection Fiber Mill for processing, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, accept the risk of felting or other damage, and agree to be bound by this policy. Our goal is to provide you with the highest quality service while maintaining the safety and integrity of our operations.
